Water changes are the foundation of reef aquarium maintenance, but many hobbyists don't realize they can model exactly how parameters will evolve over time given a specific water change regimen. This is especially useful when: you need to reduce a high parameter (like elevated nitrate or phosphate) and want to know how many water changes it takes to reach target; you want to know if your current water change schedule is keeping pace with daily consumption of calcium or alkalinity; or you're switching water change frequency and want to predict the new steady-state value. The calculator models the parameter at the end of each period: the value drifts up or down by the specified consumption/addition amount, then gets diluted by the water change. Run 20–50 periods to see the long-term steady state your system converges to.

How do I find my daily calcium consumption rate?
Test calcium on the same day two days in a row without dosing. The difference is your 24-hour consumption. Multiply by 7 for weekly consumption. This tells you exactly how much to dose per day.
How many water changes to halve a high nitrate level?
It depends on the change size and accumulation rate. Use this calculator: set initial value to your current nitrate, set accumulation to 0 (to ignore production and just model dilution), change size to your %, new water to 0 ppm. After N water changes you'll see the trajectory.
What is steady-state?
Steady-state is when accumulation from one period exactly equals removal via water change. For a parameter that adds 5 ppm/week with a 10% water change, steady-state is 5/0.10 = 50 ppm. You can use this calculator to verify that quickly.
How often should I do water changes?
For reef tanks, 10–15% weekly or 20–25% biweekly is common. The frequency should match your nutrient export needs — heavier feeding and more fish require more frequent or larger changes. Some minimal-feeding SPS tanks get by with monthly changes.
