Coral Placement Guide

Correct coral placement is essential for coral health and growth. Different coral species require different levels of lighting and water flow.

Coral placement basics

A reef aquarium can generally be divided into three zones:

Top of the tank

High light and strong flow.

Suitable for:

  • SPS corals

  • Acropora

  • Montipora

Middle zone

Moderate lighting and flow.

Suitable for:

  • LPS corals

  • Euphyllia

  • Favia

Bottom of the tank

Lower lighting and gentle flow.

Suitable for:

  • Mushroom corals

  • Zoanthus

  • soft corals

Why correct placement matters

Corals rely on stable environmental conditions. Strong lighting and stable nutrient levels are especially important for growth and coloration.

Incorrect placement can cause:

  • tissue recession

  • stress

  • coral bleaching
