The Sargassum Triggerfish (Xanthichthys Ringens) is commonly referred as Sargassum, Red Tailed Triggerfish, Balistesringens, Balistes Nitidus, Balistes Notatus, Balistes Cicatricosus, Balistes Heckeli.

The Sargassum Triggerfish, comes from the Caribbean Ocean and is mostly purple in color. The sides are marked with evenly spaced spots that are darker than the rest of the body. The fish is also outlined in darker lines that progress into the tail and change from their dark color into a red coloration. It vocalizes using a "grunting" sound.

A 125-gallon or larger aquarium with rocks and caves provides a good habitat. It will rearrange the landscaping and rocks as it wanders in and out of the caves. The Triggerfish are very friendly and make a great pet as well as a great conversation piece.

Triggerfish are extremely personable and entertaining, and make great tank mates with other fish of similar size or temperament. Sargassum Triggerfish can be kept in a mated pair, or even in groups if introduced simultaneously. Tankmates should be chosen with care as Sargassum Triggerfish, whilst not anywhere near as belligerent as other members of the family, can still be moderately aggressive. Tiny, placid fish should be avoided. Adult Triggerfish can eat invertebrates, especially shrimp, but also other crustaceans, molluscs. Usually do not bother corals. They can be aggressive towards other triggerfish and should only be kept together in sufficiently large tanks

Triggerfish are carnivores and should be fed two to three times a day a high quality diet of meaty items such as Mysis shrimp, krill, silversides, clams, and chopped seafood. Hard shelled items are important to keep their teeth in good shape. Algae clips with nori are a favorite treat and may be quickly devoured. They are easy to keep and usually learn to eat dry foods as well. Triggerfish are heavy feeders and thus strong filtration is necessary.
